Application Report SLVA 662 鈥 July 2014 Demystifying Type II and Type III Compensators Using Op- Amp and OTA for DC/DC Converters SW Lee Power Management ABSTRACT The error amplifier for frequency compensation can be a simple voltage-to-voltage amplification device, that is, the traditional Op-Amp. This type of Op-Amp requires local feedback (between its output and inputs) to make it stable. And also, the error amplifier can be a voltage-to-current amplification device, that is, the gm Op-Amp (Operational Transconductance Amplifier, OTA). This is an open-loop amplifier stage with no local feedback . This application report describes how to select the placement of compensation poles and zeros properly using Op-Amp and OTA for both Type II and Type III compensators.
