Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Third H ospital, Second Military Medical University, Shanghai 00438, China) ABSTRACT The scientificalness of traditional hinese medicine (T M) is often doubted and criticized for the record inHuangdi Neijing that the liver islocated intheleft of thehumanbody. Themost popular explana- tionof this criticismis that the conception of zang-fu viscera inT M is quite different fromwhich defined in Westernmedicine. It means that the zang-fu viscera in T M are not exactly the corresponding anatomical organs inmodernhumananatomy but reflect the functions of some systems in humanbody. According to the classical theories of T M in Huangdi Neijing , we consider that the record of liver located in the left of the human body is based onthe BaGua( Eight Diagrams) of traditional hinesephilosophy, not thehumananato- my. Inbrief, the conceptionof zang-fu viscera is initially a gross anatomical conception, and in a sense the anatomic sites andfunctions of which are mostly similar tothose described in Western medicine.
