Belts and chains represent the major types of flexible power transmission elements. Fig.8.1 shows a typical industrial application of these elements combined with a gear-type speed reducer(减速器). This application illustrates where belts, gear drives, and chains are each used to best advantage（以最好的方式）. Rotary power is usually developed by the electric motor, but motors typically operate at too high a speed and deliver too low a torque to be appropriate for the final drive application.（too……to） For a given power transmission, the torque is increased in proportion to the amount that rotational speed is reduced. 8 belt drives and chain drives So some speed reduction is often desirable. In general, belt drives are applied where the rotational speeds are relatively high, as on the first stage of speed reduction from an electric motor or engine. A smaller driving pulley is attached to the motor shaft, while a larger diameter pulley is attached to a parallel shaft that operates at a correspondingly lower speed. Pulleys for belt drives are also called sheaves. The linear speed of a belt is usually 10-30m/s, which results in relatively low tensile forces in the belt. These are four main belt types: flat, round, V, and synchronous(同步带). Flat and round belts may be used for long center distances between the pulleys in a belt drive. On the other hand, V and synchronous belts are employed for limited shorter center distance.
