A nonnative language not the mother tongue a second language (as English is in the case of Singapore) a foreign language ( as English is in the case of China) issue: a second language VS a foreign language What does it mean by “acquisition”? How does it differ from learning? What does it mean by “acquisition”? Acquire--acquisition Informal, unconscious acquisition A subconscious process taking place in a naturalistic context where there is a focus on meaningful communication. As is seen to be akin to the process followed by children in first language acquisition(Krashen, 1976,1977, 1978) Acquisition VS learning Learning: formal conscious learning Learning is a conscious process, taking place in a formal context such as a classroom where there is a focus on forms ( such as grammatical rules) Example John acquires the meaning of breakfast “break+fast” accidentally from his conversation with his mother and he gets interested in studying the roots of words and decides to read a book on this to get more knowledge. How does John learn English, acquiring or learning? Many researchers of SLA use the two terms interchangeably. Second Language Acquisition/Learning shortened as SLA/SLL The development of SLA In the 1940s and 1950s An sudden increase in interest in foreign language teaching and learning, particularly in the US, during and after WWII. The need for effective language skills both for communication with allies and for intelligence (情报、谍报)and counterintelligence work against enemies.
