This book is one of the Translation Studies Series by the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. The author, taking language functions as a starting point, extensively reviews different functional linguistic theories of and approaches to translation studies. Her comments are reasonable, criticisms convincing. The book is divided into two parts: Theories and Practices, the former reviews and comments on the British-based school of discourse analysis and the German-based school of functionalism, the latter demonstrates the author’s own attempts in applying the different functional theories in the study of English/Chinese translations. Her studied objects range from translation examples from James Joyce’s Ulysses to commercial advertisements and to IT terminology. The book is well-knit with original perspectives and reliable data. It is a rare reference book for post-graduate students in Translation Studies as well as for other researchers in the area.
