Course Overview
subject: Fundamentals of electricity and magnetism, comprising the material from Chapters 25-35 of the textbook.
students learning goals: to understand and master the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism, including the concepts of electric and magnetic fields, electric potential, linear elements (resistors, capacitors, and inductors), dc and ac circuits, sources of magnetic field, and Faraday’s law.
Relation to Other Courses: P196 is the second semester of a three-semester series. P195 covers the principles of mechanics. P197 covers the principles of optics and modern physics.
Enrollment Information
Prerequisite: Math 151 and Physics 195.
Adding/Dropping Procedures: enrollment services, or by add code from the instructor.
Last day to ADD/DROP is February 3, 2015.
Course Materials
Required Materials
Textbook: Knight – Physics for Scientists and Engineers – 3rd edition – Pearson - with MasteringPhysics.
The textbook is available in full, 5 split volumes, and e-book. Either option works. The material for P96 is contained in volume 5.
Previous editions can be used as well, though the numbering of the end-of-chapter problems can be out of synch with Masterinphysics.
Masteringphysics can be purchased directly from , or bundled with the book and/or e-book.
Course Structure and Conduct
The 3 weekly lectures include discussions, derivations, videos, and problem solving discussions. We’ll cover the material at the rate of about 3 lectures per chapter.
