Brief Introduction to Listening Definition of Listening Listening comprehension refers to understanding the spoken language: 1. Process of listening 2. process of understanding Levels of listening comprehension: Lower Level: understanding only the facts explicitly stated in a spoken passage that has very simple syntax and uncomplicated vocabulary. Advanced Level: implicit understanding and drawing inferences from spoken passages that feature more complicated syntax and more advanced vocabulary. Elements in listening 5 W and 1H What: what happen Who: who are talking? Or who are involved? Where: where does the conversation or event happen? When: ..... Why: …… How:…… c) Some skills in listening Prediction: predict through background knowledge Taking notes: Notional word: Adjective, verb, noun and so on Function Word: proposition, article and so on Guess meaning: (context) 1. you must be very exhausted after a long trip 2. we call it a mini-van. We need a big vehicle when we all travel together. 讲授法 40 Minutes Step 2. Some tips for listening comprehension Tip 1: If you dont understand something right away, dont give up. Keep listening. The speaker might say something later that will help you understand the main idea. Tip 2: Listen for key words. Key words are stressed. They are louder, longer, and higher pitched than other words. These are the words that the speaker thinks are most important in a sentence. Dialogue: A: I went to the store? B: which store? Tip 3: Pay attent
