LITERARYCRITICISM2014-9分析

“Only by living fully can we fully understand a good book, and only by reading fully, and understanding most of what we read, can we realize all the possibilities that living presents.” Most books of criticism are intended for writers and other critics, not to the average reader. Critic’s Function: interpretation, not judgment. Tolstoi: “Art is the transmission of emotion.” Experienced reader, or interpreter, or scholar. Capable of experiencing and communicating; Literature contains “criticism of life”; A novel may show us worlds we do not know, but should know. A novel may correct our perspective toward the world with which we are too well acquainted. Imaginative literature must draw on life and mirror it concretely; Art is the control of experience: The control of the artist; Over himself; Over the medium selected; Over the reader or observer of the artistic work; Art may interpret reality to men, and men to themselves; Philosophy: philosopher teaches obscurely; poet is popular philosopher; poetry is philosophy teaching by example; Mending Wall by Robert Frost Something there is that doesnt love a wall, That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, And spills the upper boulders in the sun; And makes gaps even two can pass abreast. The work of hunters is another thing: I have come after them and made repair Where they have left not one stone on stone, But they would have the rabbit out of hiding, To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean, No one has seen them made or heard them made, But at spring mending-time we find them there. I let my neighbor know beyond the hill; And on a day we meet to walk the line And set the wall between us once again. We keep the wall between us as we go. To each the boulders that have fallen to each. And some are loaves and some so nearly balls We have to use a spell to make them balance: Stay where you are until our backs are turned! We wear our fingers rough with handling them. Oh,
