The irrational was used as a force to break up the existing systems. In politics, it could be aggressive and reactionary; in writing, the release of the unconscious gave rise to the idea of “stream-of-consciousness”. Characteristics of Modernism myth was related to the unconscious: In psychology a deliberate connection was made by Freud and Jung between the unconscious mind and ancient or primitive myths. e.g. the Oedipus complex. Myth was used in art and music. It also entered politics in connection with nationalist and racist aims. seek the essential self: This was linked to the philosophy of Nietzsche. Those were anti-rationalist philosophies, anti-Enlightenment attitudes. Characteristics of Modernism a sense of the absurd: This later developed into a form of theater. One way of coping a world that seemed to have gone mad was to join it. the alienation of the artist from society: Many saw themselves
