Crashworthiness Evaluation of Side-Door Beam of Vehicle

Side-impa ct collisions are the second leading cause of death and inj ury in the traffic accidents afte r f rontal
crashes. Side-door beams were developed to reduce the velocity and dep th of door intrusion into the pa ssenger
compa rtment in side impa ct crashes. Assessing the effectiveness of side-door beams is significant f or reducing
occupant f atalities and serious inj uries. In this study, f ull-scale side-impa ct test fi nite element models were
p resented. The test numerical models are based on the FM VSS-214. The crash simulations utilized the LS-DYNA
fi nite element code. The capability of impa ct energy absorp tion of side-door beams is discussed herein. Analyses
on the p erf ormance of beams in side crashes include disp lacement and intrusion measurement of door and
inj ury analysis of dummy. This study results indicate that the side-door beams have considerable po tential f or
reducing occupant inj uries. These results and p rocedures can be applied as a referencef or the optimal design of
the side-door beams.
1 Introduction
The traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of mortality in modern society. Car safety became the most
important issue immediately in the development of the automobile. Inj uries due to road accidents are a problem
that can be controlled considerably if adequate attention is given to accident and inj ury prevention strategies.
