FLAME RETARDANTS GENERAL INFORMATION PP Flame retardant applications for polypropylene are proportionately much less important than for other resins such as styrenics and engineering thermoplastics. This is due mainly to the difficulty in reaching the high standards of flame retardancy required in the electronics and building industries with polypropylene compounds (PP). The reason of such a difficulty is the high crystallinity and flammability of PP. Main application for FR PP are waste water pipes in the building industry, lamp sockets, connectors, internal parts of electronic appliances and yokes for television sets. Considerable efforts are being invested to provide the market with more cost efficient flame retardant systems for PP applications. This data sheet provides preliminary information on the preparation of FR PP. As a general rule, PP block copolymers requires more flame retardants than homopolymers. 1. PP FLAME RETARDED TO UL 94 V-2. As it is difficult to achieve a high standard of flame retardancy with PP, many applications require only the less severe UL 94 V-2 rating. In this case, an FR system is often introduced as a masterbatch concentrate in order to improve its dispersion. Usually masterbatch concentrates for PP contain circa 50-80% of FRs including antimony oxide and the carrier is selected to achieve optimal compatibilization with the polymeric matrix. For PP, a PP with an MFI of at least 20, modified PP or EPR can be used. Efficient fire retardants suitable for PP UL 94 V-2 are often based on aliphatic bromine. The various FRs are chosen as follows: 1 FR-720 bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) of TBBA (68% bromine) is the most popular FR for these applications.
