Introduction 1.1 General introduction This CD-ROM is the third in a series of identification guides developed with funding from the U Environment Agency. Previous CD-ROMs covered the identification of blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) and green algae and this CD-ROM extends coverage to the freshwater diatoms. However, with over 2500 species of freshwater diatoms recorded from Britain and Ireland and diatom taxonomy in a state of flux, a comprehensive guide would have been impossible to complete with the limited funding available. This key covers those taxa most likely to be encountered by Environment Agency staff and others involved in routine monitoring whilst still incorporating enough functionality to permit the database to be expanded
