Throughout history, people have used simple heat tests to determine whether materials were genuine or fake. The year 1887 is looked upon as the dawn of present-day thermal analysis. It was then that Henry Le Chatelier, the famous French scientist, carried out his first thermometric measurements on clays. Just a few years later in 1899, the British scientist William Roberts-Austen performed the first differential tem - perature measurements and so initiated the development of DTA.
