A bstrac t: On the basis of introduction of the development process of fractal theory, this paper gives the definition of
fracta,l a variety of theoreticalmodels of fractaldmi ension calculation and analysis of the differences and linkages among
diverse models. It also summarizes the achievedmajor research results, for the fractal theory is applied to the soilparti
cles, sand particles, atmospheric particulates, road dust, solid fuel combustion or solidwaste incineration and rockme
chanics. The problemswhich need to be further resolved are raised. Fractal theory has a broad prospect of research and
application, for it provides new methods for the study of solid particles of the physical and chem ical characteristics.
