No Waste on Tables叫停餐桌上浪费中国舌尖上的美味闻名世界,但是中国餐桌上的浪费也是让人触目惊心。据统计,中国人每年浪费的粮食足以养活两亿人,每年倒掉的厨余是全年粮食总产量的十分之一,叫停餐桌上的浪费刻不容缓。
While you often hear Chinese parents tell their kids not to waste food, the fact is that food waste amounts in the country are far beyond your imagination.
In hotels and restaurants, it’s quite common that people order much more than they actually can eat. Many dishes are left unfinished, even untouched when waiters come to clear the tables. A mid?sized restaurant is reported to dump about two tons of kitchen waste a day.
About 800 million tons of protein and 300 million tons of fat are wasted each year, enough to feed 200 million people, based on a China Agricultural University survey.
Another survey about the food wasted in Chinese colleges and universities shows that the food wasted on campus accounts for a third of the total amount of students? meals. If there were about 30 million students in colleges, the left?over food would be enough to feed about 10 million people for a year.
The country looks particularly wasteful when compared to other countries. Statistics in 2012 showed that food waste made up nearly 70 percent of the country?s garbage in China while in many developed countries, the percentage was less than 20. This may have something to do with our culture. Chinese people are well known for their hospitality. It is widely believed that the more the dishes, the better. If all the food prepared is eaten up, the guests may feel unhappy and the host may be thought as unfriendly and mean. So the hosts often order more than enough for fear of losing face.
Professor Yuan Longping, father of hybrid rice, is pained by such a tremendous waste. “It’s really uneasy to increase the rice output, even just an increase of five or ten jin per mu. But what if we made an all?out effort and raised the output? The food is just wasted. Who knows that every grain in the bowl is the fruit of so much pain and toil?”
