This short novel tells a murder story happened to a southern pervert lady Miss Emily and it’s full of suspense and intensely interesting. The great quantities of gothic techniques in this article is quite impressive. In terms of characters description, both the characterization of protagonist Emily, and minor characters - Emily’s father and her servant are full of mysterious which attracts readers go forward step by step; In terms of environmental description, environments indoor and outdoor are both depressed to tense readers nerves. In narrative skills, this article often upsets time sequences of real story by adopting the flashback, thus making suspense one by one. In addition, the author often shifts narrative perspectives, leaving a lot of white spaces, making simple story complicated and breathtaking. All these gothic elements make it one of the representative work of American gothic literature, flourishing in the history of world literature. So this article will explore the Gothic characteristics of A Rose for Emily to have a better understanding of this long-lasting work and the gothic style of this master William Faulkner.
