The flyback converter generally works in two ways of working: The 1. inductor current discontinuous mode (DCM Discontinuous Inductor Current Mode) or complete energy conversion: store all energy in the transformer in the flyback period ton (toff) are transferred to the output terminal. 2. inductor current continuous mode CCM (Continuous Inductor Current Mode) or incomplete energy conversion: store a part in the transformer energy reserved to the beginning of the next ton cycle in the end of toff. DCM and CCM in the small signal transfer function is not the same, the waveform of figure 3. in fact, when the input voltage of VIN converter is changed in a larger range, or IL load current changes in a wide range, inevitable across the two ways of working. So in flyback converter DCM / CCM can work stably. But the design is more difficult. Usually we can take DCM / CCM as the design reference.
