This article looks into the development and changes of the concept and its different forms exhibited. Issues examined include class characteristics and the concept of class in the Chinese American society, the importance of class in the ethnic community, class relations among Chinese Americans, and class status of undocumented migrants. The article concludes that after World War II, the concept of class among Chinese Americans has become increasingly important. Meanwhile, the ways that individuals draw lines of class distinctions have also become more complex. Aside from wealth, factors such as family background, migration history, levels of assimilation and legal status also play important roles in shaping class identifications among Chinese Americans.
