Generally speaking,Elizabeth was able to work with Parliament.This was because the Puritans in the House of Commons were still loyal to the Queen although they demanded further religious reform;and Elizabeth only called Parliament at infrequent intervals when she needed its political support. Elizabeths religious reform was a compromise of views.She broke Marys ties with Rome and restores her fathers independent Church of England,i.e. keeping to Catholic doctrines and practices but to be free of the Papal control.Elizabeth desired that there should be outward conformity to the Establishedregion,but that opinion should be left free. Her regilious settlement was unacceptable to both the extreme Protes-tants known as Puritans and to ardent Catholics. In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father,brother and sister had been. One of her mottoes was video et taceo (I see, and say nothing). In religion she was relatively tolerant, avoiding systematic persecution.
