BRIDGE PIERS UNDER CYCLIC LOADING

Abstract: This paper investigated the dynamic behaviors of corroded Reinforced Concrete (RC)
bridge piers by Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation. The Damaged Plasticity Model for
concrete, the Kinematics hardening model for rebar and the nonlinear spring element for bond-slip
behavior between the longitudinal reinforcement and concrete were applied. The corrosion effects
were simulated by reduction of rebar area, concrete cover strength, and bond-slip strength between
reinforcement and concrete. Then, the corroded RC bridge pier model considering different axial load
ratio was established, and the simulated results were compared with the test results. It was found that
the simulated hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and stiffness degradation curves were well accord
with the test results, however, the nonlinear spring element in FEM softerware could not take into the
effect of accumulative cyclic damage degradation, and further investigation is urgently needed to
capture this phenomenon.
