The language of a small island off the coast of Europe 9. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender 10. It is one of the lovely—and powerful —opportunities of English that a writer can mix, for effect, different words from different backgrounds 11. Yet there is something direct to the heart 12. A parent language, lost to us because nothing was written down 13. New words came with the Germanic tribes —the Anglos, the Saxons, etc. 14. The next big influence on English was Christianity 15. Each such addition gave English more richness, more variety 16. Another flood of new vocabulary occurred in 1066, when the Normans conquered England 17. What had developed was a modified, greatly enriched language—Middle English 18. The wealth of new thinking that sprang from the European Renaissance 19.Scholars in Britain worried that the language was out of control 20.Some wanted to set up an academy to decide which words were proper and which were not 21. Fortunately, their ideas has never been put into practice 22. That tolerance for change also represents deeply rooted ideas of freedom 23.
