PABLO PICASSO By: Megan Klein, Jessica Turner, Savannah Hulse, Ashley Gerkin, Robert Brent, Nicholas Divine, Dallas Kessman, and Marc Millan Picasso Background Pablo Picasso (birth name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso)was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. He showed a passion as well as a skill for drawing from an early age and received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. After moving to Barcelona following his sister’s death, Picasso thrived in the city, regarding it in times of sadness or nostalgia as his true home. He was sent to Madrid’s Royal Academy of San Fernando, the countrys foremost art school. While there, he admired many works from different artists, especially those of El Greco. Picasso Background continued… In 1896 Pablo’s first large “academic’ oil painting, “The First Communion”, appeared in an exhibition in Barcelona. His second large oil painting, “Science and Charity” (1897) received honorable mention in the national exhibition of fine art in Madrid and was awarded a gold medal in a competition at Málaga. In 1901, Picasso started a magazine called ‘Arte Joven’ in Madrid with his friend Soler. He completely illustrated the first edition of the magazine. It was at this point that he began to sign his paintings as simply ‘Picasso’ rather than ‘Pablo Ruiz y Picasso’. In 1949, the Paris World Peace Conference adopted a dove created by Picasso as the official symbol of the various peace movements. The USSR awarded Picasso the International Stalin Peace Prize twice, once in 1950 and for the second time in 1961 He maintained a number of mistresses in addition to his wife or primary partner.
