Central bank --What is China’s central bank? --When was China’s central bank established? --How many branches does China’s central bank have? The Peoples Bank of China (PBC) was established in 1948. In September 1983, the State Council decided to have the PBC function as a central bank. With the improvement of the socialist market economic system, the PBC, as a central bank, will play an even more important role in Chinas macroeconomic management. Introduction The Peoples Bank of China has 9 branches: Tianjin Branch, Nanjing Branch, Chengdu Branch, Shenyang Branch, Jinan Branch, Guangzhou Branch, Shanghai Branch, Wuhan Branch, Xian Branch Introduction 2. State-owned commercial banks -- What are the “big four” state-owned commercial banks? Introduction State-owned commercial banks There are four state-owned commercial banks, commonly referred to as the big four. They are the most dominant, influential and formidable players in China’s banking sector. ● Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), originally set up to provide loans to the agricultural and rural sectors. ● Bank of China (BOC), initially set up to specialize in international transactions e.g. foreign exchange services and trade credit. Introduction ● China Construction Bank (CCB), initially set up to specialize in financing construction and infrastructure projects, usually in the form of long-term loans. ● Industrial Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), originally set up to provide loans to the industrial and commercial sectors in the urban areas.
