Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862 1967 U.S. postage stamp honoring Thoreau. His life Born in Concord in 1817.His father, John, was a pencil maker. Thoreau studied at Harvard University between 1833 and 1837. In 1837,He worked as a pencil maker with his father, a handyman, a farmer, yet was at the same time an accomplished Greek scholar. His life Thoreau embarked on a two-year experiment in simple living from July 4th, 1845 to 1847. He remains one of the most accomplished and deliberate writers in the country. As a person, he had only one goal—to live as honestly and wisely as he could. He died on 6 May 1862 at the age of 44.
