Interlanguage and the ‘natural’ route of development Characteristics of IL Error Analysis Characteristics of IL IL is permeable The L2 learner’s interlanguage system is permeable, it means rules that constitute the learner’s knowledge at any one stage are not fixed, but open to amendment. All language systems are permeable. IL differs from other language systems only in the degree of permeability, and, due to the process of fossilization, in the loss of permeability that prevents native-speaker competence being achieved by most learners (Adjemian 1976). IL is dynamic IL is constantly changing. This process involves constant hypothesis testing: Learners form hypotheses about what the rules of the target language and then set about testing them, confirming them if they find supportive evidence in the input and rejecting them if they receive negative evidence. This takes place largely on a subconscious level. IL is systematic Despite the variability of IL, it is possible to detect the rule-based nature of the learner’s use of the L2. He does not select haphazardly from his store of IL rules, but in predictable ways. He bases his performance plans on his existing rule system in much the same way as the native speaker bases his plan on his internalized knowledge of the L1 system.
