Part I Names Does your name have any special meaning? My name is …, … literally means … My name is …, which was picked by my dad. It represents... No it doesnt. To me its just a couple of sounds put together. Do you like your name? Im quite happy with my name now. I think its pretty, fairly unique and sort of formal and I’m proud to have it. What names do people at home (your family members) call you? Just my name, sometimes my Dad called me son, my mom called me babe. They call me xxx for short, or sometimes just darling, its such a sweet sentiment. How are babies given their names in China? People have always showed particular concern for the meaning and sound when they name children. A name given by the father or grandfather carries their wish, pursuit, aspiration and so on. Do people in China ever change their names? Yes, when people get married in the past, or if they dont like their names, or their parents divorced, they would change their names. Hand made things Do you like making things by hand? Yea I do. I think it’s a nice hobby and gives me something to do when I’m free, I like to make some model cars and some model planes. Do you think its important for children to learn to make things by hand? I think making things by hand is quite important because many children nowadays center themselves around computer games and television, these things do not promote hands on ability, whereas making handicrafts will challenge kids and enhance their hands on skills. What handicrafts do people in your country make? Well, in my country different people enjoy making different things. Some old people enjoy making paper cuts whereas the younger generation enjoys making things like model cars. Is there anything that you would like to (learn to) make by hand? I would really want to try ceramics because ceramics are traditional Chinese handicrafts that have been around for ages, not only does it have cultural value but at the same time I think it’s really funn
