China Corresponding author: ZHANG Yue-kang, E-mail: zhangyuekang2008@ Abstract Objective To investigate the treatment strategy for medulla oblongata tumor, in order to achieve the best prognosis. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 19 patients with medullary cancer treated between January 2007 and December 2010. Among them, 18 were confirmed by surgical operation and pathology, and 1 by head imaging. ResultsTwelve patients with hemangioblastoma underwent total resection in 11 and subtotal resection in 1; 2 patients with ependymoma underwent total resection; 2 patients with cavernous hemangioma underwent total resection and gamma knife treatment respectively; and 3 patients with astrocytoma underwent subtotal resection. After the operation, neurological dysfunction recovered obviously in 13 patients and had no obvious change in 3 patients. Two patients died because of severe postoperative complications. The patient who underwent gamma knife treatment recovered obviously. Follow-up time ranged from 6 to 48 months with an average of 24 months.
