NEIGHBOUR ROSICKY This semester we have studied the appreciation of short stories taught by Mrs.Huo. By far we have learned many foreign short novels such as A White Heron, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,New England nun and Neighbour Rosicky,among which Neighbour Rosicky impresses me most.I select it to write because it touches me deeply.To a degree I am a farmer because I come from village too and I have a good knowledge of country ,of famer,of agrilculture.I have read the novel again and again,and I wonder how Willa Sibert Cather describes the agrilcultural life so vividly.After all so many people struggle to enter into the city and they favor the sounds and the fast paced life of the city. Willa Sibert Cather (December 7, 1873 – April 24, 1947) was an American author who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, in works such as O Pioneers!, My ántonia, and The Song of the Lark. In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. Cather grew up in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She lived and worked in Pittsburgh for ten years, and then at age 33 she moved to New York where she lived for the rest of her life. Cathers time in the western state, still on the frontier, was a deeply formative experience for her. She was intensely moved by the dramatic environment and weather, and the various cultures of the European-American, immigrant and Native American families in the area. Many of her novels are about frontier life, about farmer. In her novel she praises the peaceful, simple and plain rural life, and criticizes the complex, cruel life of city. She detests the indifferent city people, the dishonest crafty man and the scheming and rapacious woman.
