阅读理解提升练(七) 词义猜测题 A Have you ever wondered that we parents are the true fighters in the college-admission wars?We are pushing our kids to get good grades,take SAT preparatory courses and build résumés so they can get into the college of our first choice.In our eyes,a degree from Stanford or Princeton is the ticket for life.We see our kids’ college background as something showing how well or how poorly we’ve raised them.But we don’t realize we are selfish.We think more about ourselves than the kids. It’s true getting into college has generally become tougher because the number of high school graduates has grown.We suffer great anxiety;we worry there won’t be enough honours to show off.Fearful parents urge their children to apply to more schools than ever.We hold the belief that graduates of best universities must enjoy more success because they get a better education.All that is seemingly acceptable—and mostly wrong. “We haven’t found any convincing evidence that a prestigious university (名牌大学) matters,” says Ernest T.Pascarella of the University of Iowa,co-author of “How College Affects Students”,an 827report of hundreds of studies of the college experience. According to some studies,graduates of prestigious universities do earn much money.But even this seems like just a coincidence. Kids count more than their colleges. Getting into Yale may mean intelligence,talent and ambition.But there are many other things that are equally important.The reason:so many similar people go elsewhere.Getting into college isn’t life’s only competition.In the next competition,the results may change.Princeton economists Alan Krueger studied admissions to one top PhD programme.High scores on the GRE helped explain who got in;degrees of prestigious universities didn’t.? So,parents,lighten up.America is a competitive society;our kids need to adjust to that but too much pushiness can be destructive.The very ambition we place on our children may get some into Harvard but may also set them up
