(Page 1 of 31) ABSTRACT Computer simulations of internal combustion engine cycles are desirable because of the aid they provide in design studies, in predicting trends, in serving as diagnostic tools, in giving more data than are normally obtainable from experiments, and in helping to understand the complex processes that occur in the combustion chamber. A computer model simulating the compression, combustion and expansion processes of the spark ignition engine cycle have been developed and analyzed step by step for many types of fuels. A system of first order ordinary differential equations were obtained for the pressure, mass, volume, temperature of the burned and unburned gases, heat transfer from burned and unburned zone, mass flow into and out of crevices and the composition of combustion products. The results obtained from the present studies have shown the capability of the model to predict satisfactorily the performance and emissions of a spark ignition engine fueled with gasoline, hydrogen, and/or ethanol (single or blends).
