UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES 2008 COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR CHINESE-LANGUAGE TRANSLATORS AND VERBATIM REPORTERS NOTICE 1. Competitive examinations for the recruitment of Chinese-language translators and verbatim reporters will be held tentatively on 18 November 2008 in Beijing, New York, Geneva and other locations according to the number and location of qualified candidates convoked to the examination. 2. The purpose of the examinations is to establish a roster from which present and future vacancies for Chinese-language translators and verbatim reporters at United Nations Headquarters in New York and at other duty stations will be filled. When vacancies occur in a service, successful candidates will be recruited from the roster for that service, subject to the requirements of the service in terms of expertise and language combinations. 3. Candidates who are successful and are selected for inclusion in the roster will be assigned to fill vacancies for Chinese-language translator/verbatim reporter posts as they occur in the language services in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi and Bangkok. Appointments are subject to rotation and successful candidates may thereafter be called upon to serve at other duty stations according to the needs of the Organization. Successful candidates should note that, in accordance with the needs of the service, they may be called upon to work outside normal working hours, including weekends and holidays. Successful candidates are expected to serve a minimum of five years in a language post. 4. The examination is open to staff members of the United Nations Secretariat who meet the eligibility and qualification requirements and to qualified external applicants. The deadline for applications is 8 September 2008. 5.
