3 Cathartics Any medicinal herb that can cause diarrhea or lubricate the large intestine, aid in moving the bowels and relieve constipation is known as cathartics. They have the actions of aiding in moving the bowels, clearing away pathogenic heat and purging the retention of water. Therefore, they are mainly indicated to treat constipation, various interior excess syndromes due to food and water retention,and interior excess syndrome due to invasion by heat, etc.. In the light of the difference of the cathartic actions and adaptive conditions, this kind of herbs are classified into three subcategories, that is, purgatives, moistening purgatives and drastic purgatives, of which purgatives and drastic purgatives have the potent actions, especially the latter, while moistening purgatives have moderate actions of lubricating intestines. Therefore purgatives and drastic purgatives should be used with caution Or contraindicated in cases of chronic disease with asthenia of healthy qi, pregnancy, menstruation, postpartum, and old and weak patients.
