Based on the data on rice production of Vietnam for many years, the spatial and temporal variability of rice yields in different regions and the factors affecting rice yield were analyzed. It is indicated from the significant changing in rice yield, production, area and varieties of Vietnam that, since the economic reform in 1986, especially after the hybrid rice varieties imported from China and successfully cultivated in Vietnam in 1992, Vietnam has made remarkable achievements in rice production, turning Vietnam from a food shortage country into the second rice exporter in the world. Through the analysis of the complementarity between China and Vietnam in rice production, this paper aims to provide an important theoretical basis for guiding rice production in Vietnam.
