CAE 流狀 Application of CAE Techniques to Study the Effect of Runner Shape on the Formation of Air Pocket in Die Casting Molds 立 塞不不 流 流内 力 例流度 流流落 率利 CAE流流流狀 o 度120 o 若度 90 不易 力不 流 益流落 率 1 易 流落 率1 流流 Abstract Gas porosity is one of the main defects of the die castings, which is caused by the melts with entrapped gas during the die casting process, especially the air pocket caused by improper low speed and improper gating design. In the end of filling and its follow intensification, the entrapped gas formed in the runner is forced into the mould cavity while the melt pressure rises at the same time. The gas porosity is formed as the defect of castings near the gate. In order to reduce or avoid the formation of this kind of gas porosity, the layout and size of the gating system must give a suitable plan and design, for example, a turning angle of runners, a turning radius of runner, a reduction rate of runner section etc. The CAE technique was employed to simulate melt flowing in the runner and analyze the effect of runner shape on the formation of air pocket qualitatively. It was evident that the air pocket could be reduced a lot as the turning angle is larger than 120; however, if the angle is smaller than 90, it was not merely forming the air pocket, but losing the melt pressure. The larger turning radius, the less air pocket existed in the runner was expected. The ratio of runner sections should avoid larger than 1; otherwise, the air pocket is apt to formation.
