Peoples Square Brief： Peoples Square is the biggest public square in Shanghai. It is an awesome area to visit while in Shanghai and it’s a great place to go and see how the people of Shanghai are. It is the city’s center of politics, economy, culture and art with a group of magnificent buildings like museum, the exhibition hall, and the grand theater. The crystal-like theater is especially beautiful at night with lights on. History： This area was part of the racecourse during the concession days. After liberation in 1949, the northern part of the racecourse was built into today’s People Park and the southern part, into the People’s Square. In the 1990s, Peoples square underwent a massive reconstruction, where much of the cement ground was turned into a landscaped area. Layout: Nowadays, it covers an area of 140,000 square meters. People’s Avenue divides it into two sections. The north section is occupied by three magnificent buildings, Grand Theater to the west, City Hall in the middle, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center to the east. To the south of the avenue lies a landscaped area with a large square terrace in the middle, where a round music fountain offers a spectacular view every half an hour.
