Apr．2010，Volume8，No．4(SerialNo．79) US．ChinaForeignLanguage，ISSN 1539-8080,USA Stream．of-consciousnessofKatherineAnnePorter’sshortstories J7vG Ru (ForeignLanguageDepartment,HarbinMedicalUniversity,Heilong／iang150081，China) Abstract：ThispapertakesKatherineAnnePorter’stwoshortstories，TheJiltingofGrannyWeatheralland FloweringJudasasobjectsofstudy．ItwilltrytoanalyzePorter’swritingstylethroughherimaginaryconceptual， skill，objective，narrative，technique，vivid，psychological，descriptionandmultiplestream—of-consciousnesses，so thatwecanunderstandherstoriesandherattitudestofemalepsychologicalworldandlife． Keywords：stream—of-consciousness；KatherineAnnePorter；TheJil#ngofGrannyWeatherall,FloweringJudas 1．Porterandstream ．of-c0nsci0usness Itisthemainwritingstyleofthemodem literature，tryingtomimicaperson’schaoticthoughtprocesses， bringinginthethingswehear,seeandthinkallatonce．“Inliterature，itisthethought，feeling，etc．，inaperson’s mindinacontinuousflowduringhiswakingtime”(1988)．Jamesthoughtthat，consciousnesscouldnotbecutinto piecesandpieces．anditseemedthatitcanbedescribedas “chains’’or“series”，butitwasnottrue．Consciousness wasnotcomposedofpieces，itwasa “river”or“stream”orwecouldcallitstream—of-consciousness(James，1890， P．237)．Inordertorevealthiskindofaction，thewriteralwaysusestheinteriormonologueorinnermonologueas themostimportantcomponentofthestream—of-consciousness． Porterwrotemostfrequentlyaboutpeoplewhoencounterdisillusionmentanddespair，sometimescausedby social，economicornaturalconditionswhich they cannotcontrol，often caused by theirown selfishnessor deceitfulness．Shewritesin avery subtle，controlled manner．She nevermakeseasy explanationsaboutthe meaningofherstories，butreliesontheintelligenceandsensitivityofthereadertounderstandthethoughtsofher characters．Indirectly,theyexpressPorter’sprogressiveviewsofpoliticalandsocialphil
