The Semovente illustrated in cover illustration fought in the Western Desert in Summer 1942, and belonged to the famous ARIETE (Ram) Division, the Ghost armoured unit destroyed at Alamein and which had reported its first victory at Bir el Gobi in November 1941. As with almost all the Italian Armoured veh ic les of the Western Desert, this Semovente was painted light sand all over. On the hull nose two rams had been stencilled facing each other, and the bursting granade of the number plate had been modified in to an Artillery badge.
