傅 雷 第四十七组 :陈莲香 王微微 高丽 耿景景 Fu Lei (傅雷, courtesy name Nuan 怒安, pseudonym Nuan 怒庵, 1908–1966), was a famous translator and art critic. He was born near Shanghai and raised by his mother. He studied art and art theory in France from 1928–1932. Upon his return to China, he taught in Shanghai and worked as a journalist and art critic until he took up translating. Fu Lei is an outstanding translator, an artistic theoretician as well as a connoisseur of arts. He is one of the few modern writers who really master law of arts. His knowledge covers that of China and of foreign countries, of tradition and of modern times. Besides literature, he is excellent in painting and music, showing superb ability to appreciate them. His writing amounts to over one million words, which includes novels, prose, literary comments, prefaces, epilogues, reviews of his time, letters, and works on fine arts and music. His translations, which remain highly regarded, include Voltaire, Balzac and Romain Rolland. He developed his own style, the Fu Lei style, and his own translation theory. Though labeled a rightist in 1957, he persevered until 1966, when, at the start of the Cultural Revolution, he and his wife committed suicide. His family letters to his son Fou Tsong, a world-renowned pianist, were published posthumously and have become a bestseller in China to this day. In addition, Fu Lei translated over 30 foreign literary works including Jean Christopher, a masterpiece by French writer Remain Holland. His translation amounts to about 5 million words. Reading his writing, we get touched by his crystal thoughts and his noble personality, and understand his penetrating views on artists personality, artistic theories, literary criticism, translation, etc., Thus we know more about his rich and profound thoughts.
