Based on the statistical analysis of the results of China Discipline Ranking （CDR ），the study explores the relevance of university discipline and urban innovation ability ， and makes a com- parative analysis of the innovation ability of some cities based on the perspective of disciplines. It is found that the city innovation index is closely related to the level of regional economic development ， discipline type has an important effect on city orientation ， and the emphasis on discipline construction is an important strategy to enhance the innovation ability of cities.
