Public Speaking Unit 14 Delivering the Speech Speech making is a difficult task especially if you are a beginner. Different nightmare scenarios cross the speech maker’s mind such as what if I freeze? Or what if I forget? What if everyone laughs? In order to make speech-making easy, you could learn a few techniques that will help you in delivering a speech successfully. Unit 14 Delivering the Speech 1. Stay relaxed. You need to understand that it takes practice to be a great speaker when presenting a presentation or speaking to a group of people. Whether you are speaking for your classmates or a group of policy makers for a law, you are going to be nervous. This is okay. Even with great practice, you may still feel nervous and your adrenaline will rush to you. That’s natural. Unit 14 Delivering the Speech 2. Practice makes perfect. You have to practice your speech numerous times before you actually do it. This will help you become more comfortable with presenting your speech. Try practicing your speech in the mirror or in front of a group of your friends or family members before you present it. This gives confidence as well as a chance to correct errors. You can also correct your body movements as well as facial expressions. Unit 14 Delivering the Speech 3. Make eye contact. You want to be smiling and making eye contact with as many people in the room as possible. Make sure that you don’t miss any section of the audience. Avoid fidgeting or shuffling from side to side. Place your hands on the desk and remain still and centered. Another thing is to avoid looking at your note cards too much.
