Public Speaking Unit 13 Choosing Words Wisely When you are writing your next speech, check and make sure that you are choosing powerful words that will make an impact with your audience. You want to instill enthusiasm and excitement in your audience. By choosing your words carefully, you can persuade your audience to follow your speech like a journey from one strong statement to the next. 1. Add power to your words by using specific and colorful language. Being specific and adding flair to your words will make your audience sit up and take notice of the power behind those words. 2. Quit overusing the same nouns, verbs and adjectives during your speech. If you are tempted to use the word a second time, use a thesaurus to come up with a different one. 3. Speak actively and in a strong voice. Instead of saying, “My proposal shows you that I love what I’m doing” say “I love being a real estate agent and my proposal makes that clear.” 4. Choose to speak positive words, not only about others, but about yourself as well. The words you speak about yourself, even in your subconscious mind, have the power to raise you up and out of any situation you may be facing today. 5. Use shorter words over long words. Using words such as “ask” instead of “question” or “use” instead of “utilize” makes your words not only more powerful, but also sets a more conversational tone to your speech. 6. Avoid any technical language that your profession may use if speaking to people outside of your profession. Audiences will be quick to tune out if they are presented with a few technical words they don’t understand. 7. Evaluate your words for their influence value. You want each word to influence your audience in a positive way. 8. Check to make sure that the words you are using are not going to offend anyone. You can still use powerful words that make an impact without taking the risk to offend or alienate certain members of your audience. * * Unit 13 Choosing Words Wisely Unit 13 Choosi
