Selling Sustainability The Financial Case – Frank Sangster May 2008 Introduction Background – the science Most of the increase in average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the increase in anthropogenic GHG emissions If no action is taken on emissions, there is a 75% chance of global temperatures rising between 2 – 3oC over the next 50 years A 2 – 3oC rise in temperatures could reduce global economic output by 3% To stabilise at manageable levels, emissions need to stabilise in the next 20 years and fall between 1% and 3% after that.
