Questions Two main goals were considered in selecting PCSs: power requirements and affordability. To satisfy the affordability goal, Lee Mason, Dave Poston and Louis Qualls chose to limit the reactor fuel-clad temp to 900K to minimize fuel and material development costs and maximize use of existing tech. (Mason , Jan 2008.) Also, a SS reactor was chosen for cost. If refractory materials were chosen, the reactor could operate at up to 1300K. The refractory reactor introduces additional risk given the greater uncertainty for longterm material performance, but also the potential for greater power conversion efficiency, smaller waste heat radiators, and reduced system mass. SS, liquid-metal cooled is considered “off-the-shelf” tech. The refractory reactor introduces additional risk given the greater uncertainty for longterm material performance, but also the potential for greater power conversion efficiency, smaller waste heat radiators, and reduced system mass.
