Sustainable ?My opinion: A vehicle that, in production, operation and recycling: does not consume any resources that cannot be renewed by global natural growth within its technical life. does not pollute the Environment in any harmful sence. Is it possible ? Yes, with renewable fuels: Biofuels: The global capacity to produce biofuels like Ethanol corresponds to, at least, 50 % of todays use of fossile fuels for transportation. Electricity: With about 10 % of the Swedish electric energy production, we would be able to run the entire Swedish vehicle fleet on only electricity. – THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE ! This requires Renewable fuels (biomass based, wind, hydro, solar, …) Efficient combustion engines, or fuel cells, that can run on renewable fuels. and / or Electric vehicle drives. New or better energy storages, like batteries and Fuel- and maybe charging -infrastructure for renewable fuels and electricity Examples of vehicles The ”BioPower”, e.g. Ethanol vehicle With Ethanol from biomass The (partly) electric vehicle With renewable electricity ! The fuel cell vehicle IF the fuel is renewable … The hybrid vehicle With a biofuel and electricity The most important propertiesof a hybrid vehicle Adaptation of engine operating point … but also: Regeneration of braking energy Benefits? Reduction of fuel consumption 0...50 % depending on type, driving habits etc Reduction of emissions Depends more on the fuel used and the catalyst Increased electric power Increased subsystem efficiency and functionality, e.g. the Air Conditioner.
