It should be stressed that the phenomena of EMT is exten- sive in embryon ic development and renal fibrosis. Tubu lar EMT is highly regu lated process, it is regulated by numerous cytok ines and extracellular cues. Of the many factors that regulate EMT in d ifferent w ays, transform ing growth factor-1 (TGF-1 ) is themost potent inducer that is capable of initiating and com- p leting the entire EMT course, whereas hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and bonemorphogenetic protein-7 ( BMP-7) act asEMT inh ib itors. Th is article attempts to provide a comprehensive review of recent advances on understanding molecu larmechan ism, and therapeutic intervention of EMT in chron ic renal tubulointer- stitial fibrosis.
