William Shakespeare (1564-1616) “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day” is the typical Elizabethan, also called Shakespearean or English sonnet, consisting of three quatrains with the rime scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF and a couplet with the rime GG. The speaker is addressing his poem. Shall I compare thee to a summers day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or natures changing course untrimmd; But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wanderst in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. First quatrain To pick up a topic (起) Comparison: the beauty of a gentleman---- a summer’s day Pythagoras (569 BC – 475) : childhood-spring youth-summer manhood-autumn winter-old age there are no imperfecions in man, but there are in summer Second quatrain To develop the thought of the first quatrain (承) Comparison Summer: tending to go extremes of windiness and heat The beauty of man: more perfect Third quatrain To introduce a change (转), referring back to the man’s eternal beauty The speaker uses summer to symbolize beauty, saying that the man’s beauty will never fail like the summer’s beauty, and his beauty can grow to time.
