Abstract
E-prescribing involves doctors, pharmacists and nurses using computers containing extensive drug information to help choose and order the right medications for particular conditions. E-prescribing systems are popular and well known as “computerized physician order entry”. It is part of a requirement in health care toward the adoption of electronic medical record systems — computerized versions of patient’s paper health records. Having access to this information at the point of care will make it possible for prescribers and pharmacies to make more informed decisions about appropriate and cost-effective medications. Electronic prescribing system I am developing has the potential to improve the efficiency of health care system by conducting certain checks during the prescription process. Our prescription system allows physicians to view patient’s medical history and electronically prescribe medication. Prescriptions can be written by filling a simple form which has a number of dropdown-List of Values (LOV) that a physician can select from. There are three major methods of prescribing and they are – Direct Order Entry, Verbal Order Entry, and User Data Entry. Direct order entry requires the physician to directly enter the prescription into the system. Verbal order entries are where the prescription is called over verbally to a nurse and finally the last method allows the entry of paper prescriptions into the system.
