It can strongly affect the way we perceive. There are two types of proximity: physical and psychological. We all make judgments that later prove to be inaccurate because we were either too close to or too far from the object to perceive it accurately. * School of Humanity and Economics Pro.Guo * (2) Proximity: Distance Distorts Psychological proximity may have several effects on our communication. One is that the extent to which our own attitudes are similar to someone else’s may determine how well we understand him or her. The second effect is that when we are attitudinally similar to someone, we evaluate this person more positively than if we are not. A third effect of psychological proximity involves our readiness to respond in a specific way. * School of Humanity and Economics Pro.Guo * (3)Role: A Limiting Point of View The roles we play affect our perceptions strongly. In relation to your parents, your role is that of a son or daughter. In a classroom, your role is that of student. A role is the stance we take or are assigned in a particular situation; the role we pay affects our expectations, needs, attitudes, and beliefs about that situation; it restricts how we perceive that situation.
