5 Music 美国概况 教学课件
At the same time as all this was happening in the early 1960s, British music in the shape of The Beatles influenced American pop music. This became known as “the British invasion.” In fact, the music of Dylan and The Byrds also became an influence on The Beatles, and it’s actually almost impossible to separate the development of American and British music. The Tamla Motown record label started in 1960, and played an important role in the racial integration of popular music, as it was the first record label owned by an African American to primarily feature African-American artists who achieved crossover success. In the 1960s, Motown was a style of black music with a distinct pop influence. It featured artists such as Diana Ross The Supremes, and Smokey Robinson The Miracles. The language of hip-hop and rap can be traced directly back to its roots in the simplicity of oral poetry and African-American songs of work and protest and affirmation of equal rights. But there are so many “crossovers” these days it’s almost impossible to talk briefly about any of these genres. A duo like Gnarls Barkley began life in hip-hop, but their music now includes numerous different influences, and Brian Burton (known as Dangermouse) is also a record producer who works with all kinds of different musicians. Indie music – short for independent music – began in the late 1970s as young musicians in the USA (and the UK) began to make their own records independently from the major record labels such as EMI, Sony or Warner Brothers. The punk era saw a great growth in indie bands, and it’s never stopped. Indie music represents exactly what it says: independence, independent thought, experiment, and creativity. It doesn’t put success first. Although many indie bands have become international stars, such as R.E.M., most have retained their original artistic aims and integrity and continue to make interesting and creative music. Nirvana were the most well-known of the “grunge” indie
