The call must be switched to an alternative cell to provide service, automatically and without loss of service. Handover is a complex process requiring synchronisation of events between the mobile station and the network. In particular, there is the need to route the call to the new cell before handover can be effected whilst maintaining the old connection until the new connection is known to have succeeded. Radio channel handoff Handover is a time critical process requiring action to be taken before the existing radio link degrades to such an extent that the call is lost. Intra-cell handoff is when the channel needs to be changed when the user is still within a cell Reason: user moves into a sector served by a different directional antenna More commonly understood meaning for handoff: base-station to base-station (cell site) Neighboring cells use different channels (for interference reasons) As a user moves from cell to cell, channels are changed Handover Hierarchy 3.1 Handover 3.2 Handoff Management 3.3 Handoff Basics 3.4 Handoff failures 3.5 Channel Allocation 3.6 Handoff Implementation 3.7 Steps in L2 and L3 Handoffs Three-Stage of process for handoff 1. Initiation: the user, a network agent, or changing network condition 2. New connection generation: finding new resources and performing routing operation 3. Data flow control : delivery of data according to agreed-upon service guarantees 3.1 Handover 3.2 Handoff Management 3.3 Handoff Basics 3.4 Handoff failures 3.5 Channel Allocation 3.6 Handoff Implementation 3.7 Steps in L2 and L3 Handoffs Handoff Types soft handoff vs. hard handoff 3.1 Handover 3.2 Handoff Management 3.3 Handoff
